Century Park Hotel Internship:
Industrial training is recognized as an essential ingredient of the students’ overall development, regardless of course level or the proposed career pattern of the individual within the hotel and tourism industry.
The Jordan Applied University - College of Hospitality and Tourism course has 8 semesters and 3 summer courses. During semesters six or seven, students are placed in the Century Park Hotel to follow an internship program for 6 months/26 weeks.
The Internship provides students with the opportunity to reinforce and apply the principles and practices they have learned during the taught phases of the course within an industrial environment. They are able to develop their professional and personal qualities, as well as their technical and analytical skills. In short, the Internship enables students to consolidate two important features of the taught aspects of the course: the acquisition of technical skills and the integration of their academic studies.
The Internship consists of a 26 week placement in semester six or seven. In this phase, students are largely concerned with the acquisition of technical skills in practical operational areas, and with the development of analytical skills. The departments in which the student will acquire their technical and analytical skills are Front Office, Housekeeping, Restaurant, Kitchen, Sales, Purchasing/Store Room and the Accounting department. The program requires them to spend approximately 3/4 weeks in the Front Office, Housekeeping, Restaurant and Kitchen Departments. Students will participate in the other departments, Sales, Purchasing/Store Room and the accounting departments, for approximately 1/2 weeks.
During the final month of their internship, students are largely concerned with further development at a managerial level, and with the identification, analysis and solution of operational problems. The Internship represents a significant part of the entire course, and their value and importance to students is obvious.
A supervisor is appointed by the hotel and he/she is responsible for on-the-job training/support. He/she completes a general evaluation form on the student's competence, progress and attitudes at the end of the internship together with a specific evaluation form for the department.
Students work productively as active employees (rather than as observers). The aim is to provide an opportunity for students to work in realistic practical situations. They are able to practice and develop their operational skills, and make a more thorough analysis and evaluation of the operation than would be the case if they were just observing.
Purpose of Internship Placement
Century Park Hotel, JAU and students have specific objectives in their involvement in industrial training components, but all share some common aims:
- to develop individual maturity, self-awareness and confidence;
- to provide some structured, practical experience of the industry, its operations, its customers and its staff;
- to consolidate skills learned during studies and appreciate industrial standards and levels of performance;
